Private Habits vs. Public Duty: Drugs and Public Officers
Illegal drug use is a serious issue faced by the entire community, including public sector agencies. Where can the line be drawn between a public officer’s private life and their public duty? What are the misconduct risks that arise when a public officer uses drugs, whether in private, whilst on duty, or both? How can an officer’s private drug use impact on their public duty? What are the likely consequences for both the officer and their agency?
Presentation:
This forum aimed to provide an insight into what can result when a public officer’s private drug use and their public duty collide. The Commission presented case studies to demonstrate the behaviours, the associated misconduct risks and the likely consequences for both the officer and their agency. Guest speakers addressed the practical issues agencies face in managing the issue of illegal drug use by public officers.
