The Corruption and Crime Commission will hold public examinations of witnesses from the Department of Justice as part of its formal review of the progress being made to reduce the risk of serious misconduct in WA prisons.
The review follows six Commission reports, tabled in Parliament in 2018, that identified misconduct and misconduct risks in WA prisons.
In total, 51 recommendations for organisational changes were made, including the implementation of a corruption prevention framework, a review of policies and procedures, and improvements to screening, drug testing and training of staff.
The examinations will look at the actions taken by the Department of Justice in response to those recommendations and provide the Department of Justice an opportunity to increase public confidence in its ability to identify, examine and respond to misconduct risks.
The public examinations form the final part of the Commission’s formal review. After the review, the Commission will publish a report assessing the Department of Justice's response to the recommendations.
