Hakea Prison

Over the past few years, the Corruption and Crime Commission has investigated many allegations concerning serious misconduct with the State’s prison system. This has included excessive use of force by prison officers, where the incidents are suspected to have been incorrectly reported to the Commission or covered up.

These public examinations will explore how culture contributes to serious misconduct in Hakea and other prisons in Western Australia.

In deciding to hold public examinations, the Commission carefully balanced the public interest of the wider community, the potential for prejudice and the privacy of individuals involved. These examinations highlighted cultural learnings for all prisons in Western Australia and were best suited to be held in public.
